10 Packing Tips for a Faster, Saner Move

Packing belongings into a moving tote

Moving day doesn’t have to be chaos. Most of the stress comes from decisions made (or not made) in the week before. Here are ten habits that make the whole thing faster — whether you’re moving across Lafayette or across the parish.

1. Pack one room at a time

Mixing rooms in one container is how things get lost. Finish the guest room before you touch the kitchen.

2. Label the side, not the top

When totes are stacked three high, you can’t see the lids. A strip of painter’s tape on the side with the room name saves endless digging.

3. Heavy on the bottom, light on top

Books and cast iron in the bottom of the tote, linens and lampshades up top. Your back — and your gumbo pot — will thank you.

4. Pack an “open first” tote

Coffee maker, phone chargers, toilet paper, a change of clothes, scissors. Label it loud and load it last so it comes off the truck first.

5. Use towels and linens as padding

You’re moving them anyway. Wrap dishes in dish towels and frames in bath towels — skip the bubble wrap budget entirely.

6. Don’t overfill — lids must snap shut

A sealed, flat lid is what makes totes stackable. If you have to sit on it, split the load into two.

7. Load the dolly in threes

Three stacked totes is the sweet spot — stable, visible over the top, and easy through doorways. That’s why every package comes with a dolly.

8. Photograph cords before unplugging

One photo of the back of the TV saves an hour of guessing at the new place.

9. Purge as you pack

Every item you donate is an item you don’t carry twice. Keep a “donate” tote going in each room.

10. Give yourself the full two weeks

Our rentals include 14 days for a reason. Pack a few totes a night instead of one brutal weekend — you’ll finish calmer and break less.
