How Many Moving Boxes Do I Need? A Room-by-Room Guide

Moving totes packed and labeled by room

“How many moving boxes do I need?” is the first question almost everyone asks — and guessing wrong means either a second trip to the store or a pile of boxes you never used. Here’s a straight answer, room by room, plus the easy way to skip the math entirely.

The quick answer by home size

If you just want a number, start here:

  • Studio or small 1-bedroom: about 20 boxes or totes
  • 2–3 bedroom home: about 40
  • 4+ bedroom / whole house: about 60 or more

Those are the same tiers our rental packages are built around, because they match how real Acadiana homes actually pack out.

Room by room

Every home is different, so here’s how the count usually breaks down:

  • Kitchen — 5 to 8 boxes. Dishes, pots, small appliances, and pantry goods add up fast, and they’re heavy. Keep these boxes smaller.
  • Bedroom — 4 to 6 per room. Clothes, linens, and closet odds and ends. Wardrobe-style totes make hanging clothes easy.
  • Living room — 4 to 6. Books, media, decor, and electronics.
  • Bathroom — 1 to 2 per bathroom. Toiletries and towels.
  • Garage, attic, closets — the wild card. Tools, holiday bins, and “we’ll deal with it later” piles can easily add 5 to 10.

Three things that change the number

  1. How much you own. A minimalist one-bedroom might need 15; a packed one might need 30.
  2. Whether you purge first. Every bag you donate is a box you don’t fill. Purge as you pack.
  3. Box size. Totes hold more than a standard cardboard box and stack better, so you often need fewer of them.

The easy way: don’t guess alone

Here’s the nice part about renting reusable totes instead of buying cardboard — you don’t have to nail the number. If you’re between sizes, we’d rather help you right-size it than watch you overbuy. Tell us your home and we’ll point you to the right package, or build a custom one if you land in between.

And because every package includes a dolly, delivery, and pickup, ordering a few extra totes costs a lot less stress than running back to the store mid-move.

Not sure which package fits? See pricing or give us a call — we’ve helped plenty of Lafayette-area families figure out exactly what their move needs.
